🌿 OUTDOOR RAISED BED LINES GUIDE 🌿

4 Lines × 1.5' × 25' = 150 sq ft • Perennials + Squash Sprawl Zone

🎯 Strategic Use of Outdoor Lines

Line 1: Asparagus (permanent, 20+ year crop) - Spring delicacy!

Lines 2-4: Winter Squash Sprawl Zone - Supplements beds 9-13

Why This Works:

🌱 LINE 1: ASPARAGUS (Permanent Planting)

Specification Details
Dimensions 1.5' wide × 25' long = 37.5 sq ft
Plant Spacing 12-15 crowns at 2' spacing down the center
Variety Jersey Supreme (disease-resistant, high-yielding male hybrid)
Planting Year Year 1 (establish now, harvest starts Year 3)
Production Year 3+: 20-30 lbs/year for 20+ years!

Year 1: Planting & Establishment

Timing Tasks
March-April PLANT CROWNS: Dig trench 8-10" deep, 12" wide. Add 2-3" compost at bottom. Place crowns 2' apart, roots spread out. Cover with 2-3" soil. Water well.
May-August Ferns grow 3-5' tall. DO NOT HARVEST! Let plants establish. Water regularly. Mulch with 2-3" compost.
September Ferns start yellowing. Continue watering until frost.
October-November After first hard frost, cut ferns to ground level. Mulch bed with 3-4" compost/leaves. Clear all debris.

Year 2: Second Establishment Year

April-August Ferns grow stronger. STILL NO HARVEST! Let crowns build energy. Side-dress with compost in June. Water well.
October-November Cut back ferns after frost. Mulch heavily (4-6" compost). Bed is establishing root system.

Year 3+: HARVEST YEARS! (20+ years)

Month Tasks
April HARVEST BEGINS! When spears emerge 6-8" tall, cut at ground level with sharp knife. Harvest every 2-3 days for 6-8 weeks.
May Continue harvesting. Peak production! Expect 1-2 lbs per harvest (2-3x/week).
June 15 STOP HARVESTING! Let all new spears grow into ferns. This builds energy for next year.
June-September Ferns grow 4-6' tall. Side-dress with compost mid-summer. Water during dry spells. Ferns = food factory for crowns!
October-November After frost, cut ferns to ground. Mulch heavily (4-6" compost). This is critical annual maintenance!

⚠️ CRITICAL RULES:

Production Timeline

🎃 LINES 2-4: WINTER SQUASH SPRAWL ZONE

Specification Details
Dimensions 3 lines × 1.5' × 25' = 112.5 sq ft BED SPACE
Plus 200+ sq ft SPRAWL SPACE on paths/ground
Plants 15-20 winter squash plants total (5-7 per line)
Varieties Butternut (5-7 plants), Hokkaido/Red Kuri (4-6), Spaghetti (4-6), Delicata (2-3)
Production 80-120 lbs storage squash (supplements beds 9-13 production)
Rotation Annual planting (different from bed rotation - these are dedicated squash lines)

Annual Schedule

Month Tasks
April Soil prep: Add 2-3" compost + aged manure to all 3 lines. Winter squash = heavy feeders!
May 1-10 Start indoors: Plant seeds in pots 3-4 weeks before transplant. Use heat mat (70-75°F).
May 20-31 TRANSPLANT with protection!

Transplanting Details:

June Remove protection when nights consistently >50°F. Vines start sprawling. Mulch paths with straw (keeps squash clean). Direct vines away from asparagus!
July Flowers opening. Hand-pollinate if few bees (use small brush, transfer pollen male→female flowers). Fruits setting. Side-dress with compost.
August Fruits sizing up. Squash growing from baseball→basketball size. Keep watered but not waterlogged. Vines may cover 100+ sq ft!
September WATCH FOR COLOR CHANGE!

Harvest Signs by Variety:

Sept 15 - Oct 10 HARVEST BEFORE FROST! Cut with 2-3" stem. Handle carefully (don't bruise). Leave in sun 1 week to harden skin.
October Cure squash: 2 weeks at 70-80°F in dry location. This hardens skin + extends storage. Then store 50-55°F (4-6 months!).
November Clear ALL vines/leaves. Compost if disease-free (if powdery mildew, discard). Add 2-3" compost to beds. Rest over winter.

🔗 Integration with Main Garden

How Lines Work with 30-Bed System

Component Role in Overall System
Line 1: Asparagus Permanent crop (outside rotation). Provides spring delicacy when little else is ready. 20+ year harvest!
Lines 2-4: Squash Supplements Beds 9-13 (main Cucurbitaceae beds). Focuses on STORAGE varieties. Uses sprawl space efficiently.
Beds 9-13 Primary Cucurbitaceae (squash + cucumbers). Mix of summer squash, cucumbers, some winter squash.
Combined Production Beds: 100-120 lbs squash + Lines: 80-120 lbs = 180-240 lbs total squash/year!
